Transformative Impact of 5G Technology on Strategic Industries

The Revolution of 5G Technology: Transforming Key Sectors
How does 5G technology benefit the manufacturing sector, healthcare, education, and many other industries? For years, people have talked about real-time communication, but this will not become a reality until access to 5G technology is widespread—a technology that is still not available throughout Argentina.

In February of this year, the first 10 mobile antennas were installed by Telecom in the cities of Buenos Aires and Rosario. The capabilities of 5G have a positive impact on several technologies that have been available for years but whose full potential has been limited by current data transmission capabilities. 5G enables traditional industries to evolve into Smart Factories, where reliable, wireless, real-time communications are essential.

A smart factory is one that is digitalized and hyperconnected, where every process and operation is recorded. As with many previous technological advances, 5G has arrived and is here to stay, regardless of the technological rivalry between China and the United States. The deployment of fifth-generation mobile networks will change the way we communicate, dramatically increase the capacity of information highways, and allow everyday objects—from refrigerators to automobiles—to connect with us and with each other in real time. Its deployment represents a true technological revolution that will enable, for example, remote-assisted surgeries, the deployment of new fleets of autonomous vehicles, and coordination of agricultural operations through sensors installed across farmland.

But what exactly is 5G?
The term 5G refers to the fifth generation of mobile networks. The old 1G network, which only allowed voice calls, is long gone. Then came 2G, which introduced SMS messaging, and little by little smartphones became increasingly powerful communication tools. Internet connectivity arrived with 3G, followed by broadband mobile networks with 4G, enabling real-time video streaming and augmented reality—technologies that have now become commonplace but were completely unfeasible just a few years ago.

How will 5G change the world?
The most significant advancement will be speed. 5G will allow connection speeds of up to 10 Gbps (gigabits per second), approximately 10 times faster than the fastest fiber-optic services currently available on the market. At that speed, for example, it will be possible to download an entire movie in just a matter of seconds.
