TikTok: Revolutionizing Social Media Dynamics from China

TikTok is the new social media platform that, much like Snapchat in its early days, has taken younger audiences by storm. More recently, it has also begun introducing advertising solutions, making it one of the platforms with the greatest potential for reaching the Centennial (Generation Z) audience and positioning itself as a major player in digital advertising.

TikTok allows users to create, edit, and share 15-second videos, which can also be published on other social media platforms. It is the evolution of Musical.ly, a music-based app for teenagers that was acquired by the Chinese technology company ByteDance at the end of 2017 for approximately $1 billion—the same amount Facebook paid for Instagram five years earlier.

During 2018, TikTok became the most downloaded app on the App Store, surpassing giants such as YouTube and WhatsApp. Globally, it was the sixth most downloaded app of the year. By early 2019, TikTok had already reached 500 million users, making it the most popular Chinese app in Western markets.

One of the platform's greatest strengths is its seamless integration with other social networks such as YouTube and Instagram, significantly increasing its reach. However, its biggest differentiator has been its ability to captivate younger audiences without imposing age barriers. At the same time, this popularity has raised concerns, particularly regarding the collection of data from users under the age of 13.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the U.S. agency responsible for protecting consumers, fined TikTok $5.7 million for illegally collecting personal information from children under 13 years of age. At the time, it was the largest privacy-related fine ever imposed by the FTC.

Despite this, TikTok has continued to grow at an extraordinary pace. Its rise has been relentless, and many have suggested that it could become the next Facebook, attracting the younger audience that no longer wanted to participate in more traditional social networks. For many teenagers, TikTok became a space beyond the radar of adults—the very characteristic that has also generated concerns about the potential risks and exposure faced by younger users.
