Business Transformation: Strategies for Sustainability and Lasting Success

Environmental responsibility should be a priority across every sector of society, especially in the corporate world, where poor environmental management is creating increasingly harmful consequences for both businesses and the planet.

A sustainable company considers factors ranging from the quality of its products, the origin of its production resources, to the environmental impact of its operations, while also taking responsibility for the effects of its manufacturing processes and waste generation. Today, companies that implement sustainability policies belong to a select group of organizations that are transforming the market through their internal processes. Argentine consumers tend to view companies with a long-term vision more favorably, and investors often consider them more profitable. However, sustainability also presents a new challenge: developing integrated, long-term policies.

The first step is to understand that transformation must be gradual and strategic. Experts recommend beginning with a comprehensive assessment of the company’s economic, social, and environmental performance, identifying strengths and weaknesses in internal processes and the value chain. The commitment of senior management is perhaps the most important starting point, as strong leadership can significantly facilitate and accelerate the transformation process.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) bases its concept of sustainable enterprises on three fundamental pillars. Reviewing these principles provides an excellent framework for identifying the areas your company should improve in order to become more sustainable.

  • Pillar 1: Creating an enabling environment for sustainable enterprises and employment. This pillar focuses on encouraging governments to improve employment policies and legislation. As a business owner, your role is to understand and leverage the initiatives implemented by your government.
  • Pillar 2: Entrepreneurship and business creation. This pillar promotes entrepreneurship by improving access to information, technology, and financing opportunities, helping businesses grow and innovate.
  • Pillar 3: Sustainable workplaces based on responsibility. This principle emphasizes the responsible use of natural resources while fostering safe and healthy workplaces, competitive salaries, equal opportunities, and respectful treatment of employees.

Key aspects of sustainability:

  • Review greenhouse gas emissions. The Kyoto Protocol identifies the main greenhouse gases and establishes acceptable emission targets.
  • Pay special attention to energy consumption. Many of the planet’s resources are non-renewable, making responsible water consumption equally important.
  • Equal treatment, gender inclusion, and the integration of people with disabilities should be organizational priorities.

Basic recommendations:

  • Think before consuming: Evaluate whether resources are truly necessary, such as excessive purchasing of office supplies.
  • Print only what is necessary: Reduce printing whenever possible, purchase less paper, use recycled paper, and digitize documents. More companies are adopting these practices.
  • Batteries: Disposable batteries generate significant environmental impact. Opting for rechargeable batteries, although initially more expensive, quickly recoups the investment.
  • Replace outdated equipment: Older devices generally consume more energy; using modern, multifunctional equipment can reduce energy consumption and benefit the environment.
  • Adopt energy-saving habits: Disconnect electronic devices when not in use, turn off unnecessary lights, and reduce water consumption in daily activities.
  • Home Office: Offering employees the opportunity to work remotely at least once a week provides multiple benefits, such as reduced commuting time and improved productivity.

The journey toward sustainability is long, and every company will follow its own path as it advances. Beyond establishing a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) department and implementing sustainable policies, every organization should embrace one essential principle: use natural resources responsibly.
